What is ISAN?

Cover image
The International Standard Audiovisual Number (ISAN) is the unique, persistant and internationally recognised reference number for audiovisual content. ISAN delivers to the industry a universal shared reference to identify audiovisual works and their multiple versions across national boundaries and language barriers. The use of ISAN streamlines audiovisual rights management, reduces frictions in workflows and increase accuracy in digital transactions.
ISAN, also known as ISO 15706, is the only ISO standard identifier for audiovisual content. Together with ISBN (books), ISSN (serials), ISRC (recordings), ISWC (music), ISNI (parties), ISMN (noted music), ISLI (links), DOI (digital objects), ISAN is developed and maintained by ISO TC46/SC9 Information and documentation.

Who is behind ISAN?

Cover image
Crafted by key players in the audiovisual industry, ISAN was developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). It was specifically designed to meet the evolving demands of the digital landscape as outlined by content owners, broadcasters, media companies, and standard organizations. ISAN serves the purpose of uniquely identifying audiovisual works in accordance with ISO 15706-1 and their versions as defined by ISO 15706-2.
Notably, ISAN stands as the exclusive audiovisual asset identifier within the ISO portfolio of media identifiers. Recognized as an ISO Intellectual Property, ISAN is overseen by the ISAN International Agency (ISAN-IA), a non-profit Swiss association. Mandated by ISO through a contractual arrangement, ISAN-IA operates the ISAN Registry and appoints local Registration Agencies.
