Crafted by key players in the audiovisual industry, ISAN was developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). It was specifically designed to meet the evolving demands of the digital landscape as outlined by content owners, broadcasters, media companies, and standard organizations. ISAN serves the purpose of uniquely identifying audiovisual works in accordance with ISO 15706-1 and their versions as defined by ISO 15706-2.
Notably, ISAN stands as the exclusive audiovisual asset identifier within the ISO portfolio of media identifiers. Recognized as an ISO Intellectual Property, ISAN is overseen by the ISAN International Agency (ISAN-IA), a non-profit Swiss association. Mandated by ISO through a contractual arrangement, ISAN-IA operates the ISAN Registry and appoints local Registration Agencies.
